FAQ

Can’t find your question? Send it our way — if enough people ask, it ends up here.

binthere is free to download and use for a personal inventory. Heavy AI usage (lots of bulk scans and value estimates) may require you to plug in your own Anthropic API key — that cost goes directly to Anthropic, not to us.

Yes. binthere is offline-first. Create bins, add items, scan QR codes, check things in and out — all without a connection. Sync happens in the background when you’re online.

Yes. You can skip sign-in entirely and use binthere as a local-only app on one device. You’ll miss out on:

  • Sync across your iPhone and iPad
  • Household sharing
  • Cloud backup

You can sign in later and your existing data will upload.

Not yet. binthere is iOS-only at launch. Let us know if you want Android — if there’s demand, we’ll look into it.

binthere runs on iPad today but isn’t optimized for it. A proper iPad layout is on the roadmap — vote for it.

Very accurate for common household objects — tools, sports gear, electronics, clothes, books. Less accurate for highly specialized items (rare parts, antiques, obscure brands). You always review before saving, so wrong guesses are quick to fix.

No. AI features require a connection because they call the Anthropic API. Everything else in binthere works offline.

No. Photos you send via AI scan are used only to generate the response. Anthropic does not train on API data.

Locally on your device (always) and in your Supabase account (if you sign in and enable cloud sync). You own your data. You can export it any time and delete your account any time — which fully removes everything.

No. No ads, no trackers, no data brokers. Read the privacy policy for the full breakdown.

Settings → Account → Delete account. This removes your auth record, household memberships, items, photos, and everything else. Non-reversible.

QR: yes, if they encode the right URL. Easiest path is to re-print binthere’s generated labels on adhesive paper.

NFC: any blank NDEF-writable tag works. See NFC tags for details.

The 4-character code (e.g. D4J6) is printed big on the label on purpose — type it into the search bar and it opens the bin.

Up to 8 members per household. If you need more, let us know.

Can members see each other’s checkout history?

Section titled “Can members see each other’s checkout history?”

Yes — a household is a shared inventory, so checkout history is visible to other members. Viewer-role members can see but not modify.

  • Make sure the camera permission is granted (Settings app → binthere → Camera)
  • Clean your camera lens
  • Try better lighting
  • Type the 4-character bin code into search instead
  • Check you’re online
  • Pull down to refresh on the Zones screen — this forces a sync
  • Settings → Account → Sign out and back in if it’s really stuck
  • Report it if it keeps happening
  • Check you’re online
  • If you’ve set a custom API key in Settings → AI, double-check it’s valid
  • Send us the photo + error if it keeps failing — this is usually a bug we can fix
